Understanding Compatibility of Batteries Across Generations of GoPro

  1. Battery Generation

Each GoPro camera model has its own battery generation.

  2. Compatibility within Generations

Some models may have compatibility differences even within the same battery generation.

GoPro Batteries: Four Generations

From the original model to the latest GoPro HERO 12, there have been 12 generations of GoPro itself, but when it comes to the batteries used, they can be broadly categorized into three generations.

  1. 4th Generation: GoPro HERO 13.
  2. Third Generation: From GoPro HERO 9 to GoPro HERO 12.
  3. Second Generation: From GoPro HERO 5 to GoPro HERO 8.
  4. First Generation: From the original GoPro HERO to GoPro HERO 4.

As seen in the chart, GoPro batteries from the second generation onwards maintain compatibility across roughly four GoPro generations.

The first-generation GoPro models (from the original HERO to HERO4) used unique battery designs and specifications for each model, making it impossible to use older batteries with newer models.

Starting with the second generation of GoPro batteries, the design was standardized, allowing a single battery type to work across four generations of GoPro cameras. This innovation enabled users to utilize their batteries across multiple devices.

There are two types of batteries available: the standard base battery and the high-performance Enduro battery. Notably, the HERO13 Black now comes equipped with the Enduro battery as a standard feature.

Compatibility List of GoPro Models and Batteries

Next, let's look at the compatibility of the camera models and batteries. Batteries from GoPro HERO4 and earlier cannot be used across generations, so they are excluded.

4th Generation GoPro Battery: AEBAT-001

The 4th-generation battery, introduced with the HERO13 Black, is the "AEBAT-001." With a capacity of 1,900mAh, it comes standard as an Enduro battery, providing enhanced performance and durability. The battery and terminal design have been significantly revised, rendering it incompatible with GoPro batteries from the 3rd generation and earlier.

The AEBAT-001 allows for extended recording times, supporting 5.3K/30fps for over 1.5 hours and 1080p/30fps for over 2.5 hours, outperforming previous battery models in terms of longevity.

Third Generation: ADBAT-011 / ADBAT-001

The batteries used up to the latest generation, GoPro HERO12, are based on "ADBAT-011" and "ADBAT-001" with "ADBAT-001" being called the Enduro battery. They are not compatible with the second generation.

Both batteries in the third generation have a capacity of 1720mAh, about 40% larger than those from the second generation.

Second Generation: AJBAT-001 / AABAT-001-AS

The second generation, used from GoPro HERO 5 to HERO 8, includes the "AABAT-001-AS" originating from GoPro HERO 5 and the "AJBAT-001" from GoPro HERO 8, which supports high-current output. They are not compatible with the third generation.

While both are compatible, note that the older model battery, "AABAT-001-AS," is not compatible with GoPro HERO 8.

Both batteries in the second generation have a capacity of 1220mAh, slightly lower than those from the third generation.

Although designed for the GoPro HERO8 series, this battery is also compatible with HERO5 to HERO7. However, as these models are now older, the battery is almost discontinued.
